As part of the bicentennial of the beginning of the construction of the Rideau Canal, come explore the locks of Ottawa listed on the prestigious World Heritage List. Discover the fascinating history of the canal, where you can find the oldest stone building in the capital, today the Bytown Museum, built in 1827. The tour ends at beautiful Major’s Hill Park, Ottawa’s first park, where the ruins of the house and the statue of Colonel By, the royal engineer responsible for building the canal between 1826 and 1832, are located. Don’t forget your good walking shoes because you have to climb a steep slope.
The departure is at the Bytown Museum, 1, Canal, below the locks, in the valley between the Château Laurier and Parliament Hill.
